Jenny couldn’t make a move
- all her muscles were tight as if she got actually paralyzed. “Gosh, don’t be such a baby!” she said to herself, “It’s just a wind howling through the gaps, nothing to be afraid of”. She managed to push the door a bit with her cold hand, trying to be as quiet as possible. But the treacherous door didn’t want to be quiet as it creaked loudly and immediately gave away Jenny’s whereabouts. Her pulse rate quickened even more and her heart was beating so fast that for a split-second Jenny caught herself thinking that her ribs might actually break from such a pressure.
She took one more step in the direction of the source of that creepy noise, hoping that everything was only her imagination. She tried to hear that noise (or rather a kind of whistling) again but her fast heart beat made her completely deaf to all the outside world. Jenny continued slowly approaching to the kitchen, trying to feel switchblade in the pocket with her sweaty palms — just in case. “There can’t be anyone in the house. It must have been just a wind,” she calmed herself, recalling her childhood and all that problems with drafts in this house because of the poorly installed windows.
Distracting herself from worse thoughts she prepared to bravely open the door to the kitchen and sigh with relief at the sight of the empty room. With all her might she opened the door wide and saw exactly what she was hoping to see - a completely empty room with no trace of strangers. She giggled nervously and said out loud, “What a dummy coward I am! Those stupid windows with gaps made me afraid of a stupid wind”. She hid her ‘weapon’ back in her pocket and suddenly froze. Her breath stopped and her stomach knotted as she felt someone’s presence right next to her. And that someone started whistling right in her ear. “At least the windows don’t need reinstalling” - that was her last ironic thought before falling into darkness.
