Once upon a time, there was one dwarf
who lived in a big, thick, and green forest. Every day he woke up with the sunrise and, after a small and light breakfast, started working. There were always many tasks to do: chop the wood, work in the garden, make repairs when something broke, and many more. And that day wasn’t an exception.I pulled back the curtain and looked out the window. “Still dark, but one bird is definitely about to sing, so it’s high time to start the day. I don’t have another choice, do I?” I thought. I got up, ate without rushing so everything would settle well in my stomach, put on my boots, and went to the river to wash clothes.
Usually, I walk very fast, but today, on the way to the river, I didn’t want to rush. I knew my friend, Owl Jungle, would be waiting for me—she always has both a good piece of advice and a funny joke. But still, I would meet her later today.
I turned my head to the right and saw a company of other dwarves.
— Hi, Dudu! – one dwarf greeted me
— Hi, Minny, — I smiled softly and waved my hand
Oh, not so long ago, I wanted to join them so much! But I couldn’t. They only accept the best and most hard-working dwarves in their team. Just one minute of observing them is enough to see how well everything is run: everyone knows their task, where to go, how to do this and that. And later, in the evening, they gather together on a central tree in the forest, tell what everyone did, settle a plan for the next day, and then leave to their hood. I would always come to listen to what they told and had thoughts about becoming a part of their team.
A few months ago, I moved here and then got to know my good friend Owl Jungle. She is the eyes and ears of this forest. She was the one who introduced me to the other dwarves. They were always kind to me and invited me to join them in the evening, but I was always so busy with some work that I ended up forgetting. Of course, I said sorry the next day, and they never looked offended but invited me again.
A few weeks later, I thought, why not join them, and asked one old dwarf about it. But he said that I need to work a little bit more and then I will surely be accepted. I told Jungle about it and she supported me. She told me not to get upset, that it would take just a month or two.
— Just show them what you really can, and they will cry for you joining them, – she said. I laughed and thanked her.
I worked hard, as planned. The dwarves looked friendly as always, and I finally decided that I was ready to join them. I went to Jungle’s house and told her about my thoughts.
— That’s great, Dudu! I will fly right now to them and order a sweet word for you. – And she left.
I went home smiling like a Cheshire cat. I was cooking dinner when I heard a knock at my door. I opened the door—there wasn’t anyone—and when I was just about to close it, I noticed something that looked like a letter lying on the ground. I picked it up. “From Jungle”, it said.
“Oh my god!! Jungle can write? I didn’t know that haha.” I rushed to the kitchen and tore the letter open. I started reading fast.
— My dear Dudu, I know how willing you were to join the Dwarves Workers team, but unfortunately, I am to announce they refused to accept you. When they told me that, I couldn’t believe my ears. “But why?” I asked. “He is ready, he is so hard-working. He can do anything that you can.” But they said no.
Please remember, everyone can get it wrong. You are the best, don’t let this news upset you.
“Sure,” I thought. How can it upset me? I left dinner untouched and went to sleep. The next morning, when I stepped out of my house, Jungle was already waiting for me, smiling as if it were the best day of the year.
— Morning, Dudu!
— Not now, Jungle. I need to have some time alone, – I said
She looked surprised by that answer. “What does she expect? That I will jump and say nothing happened?” And a few days passed like that. The dwarves also acted like nothing happened. Everyone is so happy; they probably think that I will forget everything as if it never happened.
One day, Jungle came to me when I was working.
— Dudu, I don’t understand anything. A few days have already passed. Don’t you think it’s already time to start talking with everyone and stop being freaky?
— Are you serious, Jungle? I was so thrilled to join them, they acted so welcoming, and one evening I got the news that way.
— Oh, so that’s what made you so sad? I’m sorry, I wanted to come and tell you, share emotions with you, but I burned my wing so I asked that little frog to come and tell you, but I didn’t know that it would upset you.
— Upset me? Of course it did. I hoped to join them, worked hard, and what did they do? Said no, without any explanations? Good for them, I can live on my own.
— Wait, what did they say?
I looked at her to see if she didn’t burn her ears.
— They said what you wrote in the letter.
— What letter? I can’t write, I don’t have fingers.
— But there was a letter on the ground... wait. It wasn’t you?
— Of course it’s not. I can’t write.
— So the letter wasn’t from you, and I actually got accepted??
— Yes, you did! Congratulations! And now, I will go and find that frog.
Happy end
