Lara was having a not-so-good day.
As she closed the door to the apartment, she was greeted by the soft glow of the many lamps she and Kris had collected over the past few years of living together. But then—a smell. A very nice smell. Her favourite food. She quickly kicked off her clunky boots and rushed toward the kitchen, where she found Kris cooking, swaying slightly to the playlist they’d curated specifically for Friday night dinners.
“How do you always know when I need you?”
Kris turned around, surprised - hadn’t heard her come in.
“Did something happen at work today?” Kris asked, a flicker of worry in the eyes.
“Nothing major. Just… everything kinda piled up. Today wasn’t the easiest.”
“Do you wanna talk about it?”
“Mhm, no, not really.” Lara exhaled softly.
Lara stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Kris from behind, resting her cheek between their shoulder blades as they kept stirring the pan.
“To answer your question… I don’t know.” Kris smiled softly, “Maybe it’s my superpower. Or maybe it’s just that I love you enough to feel it.”
Dinner came together easily after that - Kris plating the food while Lara set the table. They moved together like a well-oiled machine, quiet and in sync.
As they ate, there wasn’t much that needed to be said. Just sitting close, feeling the other breathe, was enough to feel whole.
After dinner, Kris gently helped Lara take off her makeup and handed her the comfiest pajamas she owned. Then they curled into bed together, Kris propping up the laptop and hitting play on their favourite comfort movie.
Lara curled into their side, lazily tracing the outline of Kris’s tattoos while the movie played softly in the background.
A glance. A touch on the wrist. The way Kris adjusted Lara’s blanket when she shivered slightly - these were their ways of saying I love you, without needing the words.
Love wasn’t just kisses and soft mornings. It was quiet trust, safe silences, the way their hearts beat a little calmer in each other’s arms.
Being in love felt like waking up in warm sunlight - even on a rainy day.
