On Being Smart by Maria Ignatieva

There’s nothing about being smart
that hasn’t been said yet. People are usually good at talking about their experience of being smart. The simple, humane joy of being better than your neighbour, the joy of a secret-keeper who Knows More and isn’t hiding it much, the despair of not having anyone to share the pleasure with – somewhat hypocritical, but so innocent.
There isn’t much to say about being smart. And, really, why would I say anything? The books are pretty much all about it – smart people talking to other smart people about smart people. You would know that, if you read them.
No, I don’t think I have anything to say to you. You really have to experience it to understand it. I guess you either have it or not, as simple as that… Excuse me? I’m kind of talking to you. Being smart is hard, but it’s not at all necessary for being polite, you know. I thought even you’d understand this. It’s the basics, after all.
No, seriously, are you even listening? I mean, not everybody happens to be smart, but when someone who does is talking, paying attention is the least the others can do, don’t you think? Come on, what are you even looking at? Whatever it is, you should realize that it won’t bring you as much wisdom as I am. There’s nothing more useful for a humble mind than learning from a smart one… You better trust the person who said this, she was really smart. Arguably smarter than me, even.
Hey, I’m not seeing much reaction from you, and you should really be impressed. Hey, I’m not finished here… Hey! Where do you think you’re going?
