Behind the Scenes of Life by Anastasiia Marchenko

- Grandpa, grandpa! - two small girls
were jumping around Brandon – We are ready to go. When will we go? – these two sweeties were the same curious and restless as all children at this age.
- Oh, you’ll better go to ask your grandmother, because we are waiting for her for so long.
- We have asked, she said to ask you!
- I am sure she did. Look! Finally, Daisy, you are here. – The old woman was wearing the long dark blue dress and had the incredible styling – curls with the big brooch.
- Come on, Brandon, we are on time, let’s go. – She took girls and went out.
The man was staying at the same place for two more minutes and went to the car only when he heard girls’ voices, who were calling him. These two incredible girls and his woman were the best parts of his life. After the war when he lost all his friends, he was alone and completely unconscious. He met Daisy at the town where he was sent to live after the military hospital. Daisy was the pharmacist at the local drug store, and considering he needed to buy medicaments every day, they saw each other often. She became his first friend and helped him to organize life again because he didn’t remember anything before the war started – neither his parents nor his school. It felt like he got one more birth the moment he reached this new town. Two grandchildren were his son’s daughters. They spent the time with grandparents every weekend, going to the cinema or park, and this evening they were going to the theatre. Brandon had never been to the theatre.
This group of two old people and two children came to the wardrobe, left their clothes, and got to the huge theatre hall. There were already lots of people here. The big, crystal, extraordinary beautiful lamp was the main source of light. The atmosphere was warm and theatrical restless, people were looking to the ticket, and then to the seats, and again to the tickets. Brandon felt something strange, this fuss was pleasant for him, even knowing the fact that he was in love with silence. Daisy asked the man to go and buy her a glass of wine. When he reached the buffet, the strong smell of snacks combined with the alcoholic drinks and coffee were occupying the room. It seems to Brandon that he had already known that smell, but he couldn’t recognize it. He was trying to remember all situations where it could be,
but he even never have been drinking alcohol. He bought the wine, and return to his family.
The whole audience was applauding before the play because it was already 5 minutes later from the start and nothing was on the scene. Only darkness and quiet whispering reigned in the hall when suddenly the curtains raised and the whole scene was wrapped in special smoke with the unpleasant fetor. This moment Brandon was feeling as he was at two places at the same time. Here, with his love and grandchildren and somewhere else, in the theatre too, but with the completely strange people. He couldn’t recognize them, but they were laughing together, and he heard how other people asked them to keep calm. He got the whiff of the smoke one more time, and he clearly saw the play, where was the Romeo, and Juliet. He looked at his ticket and saw that he would watch another play.
At the end of the first part, the actress was running through the row between chairs, and Brandon caught that fragrance. Light and citrus, with the sweet after note. He remembered this Juliet and Romeo playback to 1938. Juliet was actually his lovely girlfriend, whose real name was Josie. And the people who were next to him were his friends from university. This scent made him cry, and the longer he cried, the more memories came to his mind, and he was happy that even at this moment his Daisy was next to him. She noticed the strange behaviour of his husband from the moment they got to the theatre, and then when he cried after the comedy play she realized – he remembered everything, he raised the curtains of his life, and now it would be the new part.
