The Opposites by Valeria Shmagun

They were travelling all over
the Eldorn Kingdom for three month now. Just she – and average witch and her cat-familiar Marcus. As passing through South Woods, they happened to appear in a trap set by seven freebooters that now started to circle them with certainly not the good intentions. Marcela immediately began to concentrate on her inner power to be ready to attack the fools, who have chosen the wrong pray, as she heard a loud scream and a tall, presumably a knight, in a massive latches with a great amount of ringing of the metal armor, runs from the woods with just a rusty spear to attack one of the bandits, but he suddenly tripped over his own leg and fell down on the grass with a very loud noise.

All on the clearing were shocked. Bandits started to laugh badly. But the witch wasn’t distracted by that snorting sound, she was long ready with the spell to attack and make all of the robbers to fall asleep immediately. The knight sat with a martyrdom groans and pulled up his helmet. He appeared to be a young curly boy of sixteen-seventeen years old, he looked very shy and his face was red of embarrassment.

The cat asked “Why would you so foolishly run after a much stronger enemy?”.

“That’s my duty of a Knight. I could never leave a damsel in distress!” boy answered with a noble.

“Hahaha! Marcela? Damsel in distress? I haven’t heard anything funnier in years!”

“Shut up, Marcus, we don’t have time for a chat! A dragon’s still waiting for us.” The witch looked very dull, tired and all that time she frowned as everything around here were highly irritating.

“A dragon?!” The boy screamed in excitement.

“Oh, yeah, we’re gonna to earn loads of money for His precious head.” Marcus smirked in an unpleasant way.

“Head? You’re going to murder him? Everybody knows that they’re smart and thinking creatures! It’s forbidden to hunt them now.” The knight looked lost and sad, he couldn’t believe that someone can take a life of such a beautiful creation! That’s an assassination!

The witch and the cat remained silent. Familiar just lost the conversation, he went to the raid to rob the robbers, which still were unconscious and witch was gone deep down in her memories, that was brought up by this foolish young man.

She was just like him once. Brave, noble, kind, honest and stupid. Completely and endlessly stupid! That’s not a world to be a naïve idiot with a messiah complex! That knowledge came to her at a great cost.

She’s an old witch, the one that lived long enough to still remember the time of the Great Hunt. The dark times, when the Church and the Inquisition forgot all about their promises to cooperate with a Witch Cluster and decided to attack and cut down every last of her kind.

How many friends she lost while still believing in kindness and mercy? How many of them she could’ve saved if she hadn’t being running away from the Church, foolishly trying to talk it through and not to hurt anyone, not to take a precious life of any living being?! She even still believed in this when they’ve caught her and tortured her month by month. Months in an isolation and pain – that was her big award for being decent and sympathetic.

Well, luckily, she did manage to get away from that flaws of her and leave this young and stupid, disable version of herself in that fortress. To burn them along with all the Inquisitors and Saints that bright Mother Full Moon, when she allowed herself to break free with a war and let her power and anger out.

Yes, this Knight will understand it too, he just needs to wait for someone to break him bad enough. Not so long for this moment to come is left.
