The Gang of Two by Serhiy Fedusov

That night Gatsby could not close his eyes.

He was thinking about the terrible accident that happened while Daisy was driving. The police must have been already investigating the hit-and-run, and one of them would have to take the responsibility for it. A lot of attention was drawn to this incident, so no money would make the police let it slide. The main question for him was: “How do we get out of it?”.

Gatsby woke up, got dressed, and went out to the garage. A brand-new car he had bought the previous week was standing there in the corner. He started the engine, ran through his plan one more time, and took off.

Buchanan’s residence was silent and dark. The only candle was slightly illuminating the bedroom on the second floor. Gatsby lighted up a lantern, directing it towards the window. A couple of minutes later, Daisy went out of the house. In her eyes were nothing but an inaudible consent: they were running from the city.

The car was riding through the solitary streets of New York, heading to the city exit. “What are we going to do now, Jay?” - asked Daisy, breaking the silence. “I got all my savings in a bag in the trunk. It will buy us some time. Till then, we have all things sorted out. Also, we will have to change our identities. Our new documents are in the glove compartment.” - replied Gatsby. Daisy took out the papers and read them aloud: “Our new names are… Bonnie Elizabeth Parker, and … Clyde Champion Barrow?”.
