The Girl in the Mirror by Kateryna Udovychenko

I walk past the mirror,

catching a glimpse of my reflection. I stop abruptly and turn to face the glass. I see a girl looking back at me, her unbrushed hair down and her expression drowsy. She has just woken up. I hear myself sigh, and she sighs with me. She hasn’t slept half the night – first studying, and then talking to her friends on the phone. She stretches, suppressing a yawn. Her grey shirt hangs down to her knees. She reaches down to smooth out the hem. Her movements are careful and precise, but a bit uncertain. I meet her gaze. Her eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, hide a tide of unspoken thoughts. Anxious yet attentive, they study my features. I try to read her mind. She’s wondering what the day might bring. She may be tired, but she seems content. Sunlight pours through the window and falls on her gentle cheek. Her lips curl into a smile. I offer her a silent goodbye. She blinks once, and I turn away.
