A Fortune-Teller Story

by Vlad Levickij
I have never believed in superstitions, broken mirrors and black cats. But once I was lying on my bed having a dream. It was the unusually colourful and real one.
There were a huge and bright stage, me, a man in black and a woman in white. Firstly, we were staying in silence, but suddenly the man took the knife from his pocket out and started stubbing the woman. Blood flowed and soon everything was filled with it. I was shocked. I shouted at that man and cried like a girl! The man looked at me and then suddenly went away without a word. I came closer to the woman (her dress became red too) and she whispered: – You broke the oath.
  – What oath?! – replied I.
  – You broke the oath! YOU BROKE THE OATH! – she cried out and died.
I looked at my hand – they were in her blood. I was completely in her blood! I started panicking and tried to run away from that place…
Then I woke up. I was trembling. Cold sweat appeared on my face. I had to go to work, but I wasn’t keen as mustard about it – I couldn’t got up from my bed. I was lying for 3 hours, giving a thought to my dream. And here it dawned on me and shocked at the same time: a couple of months ago I met  a fortune-teller, who insisted on telling me about my future. Firstly I rejected her, but she was so persistent, that I stretched my hand to let her see my palm, waiting for the fast ending of the “magical” process. Must say, that a fortune-teller made me promise I’d give her any amount of money, otherwise, if she’d predict my future and wouldn’t be rewarded – soon would she be suffering from a terrible divine punishment. On the whole, by looking on my palm a fortune-teller said, I would be a very successful man, a millionaire, an owner of a big auto company and all that jazz. It was so trivial, that I simply became angry, took my hand away and walked straightly forward, not saying a word. A fortune-teller shouted something about a curse and eternal sufferings.
After remembering this episode, I decided it's only a superstition and continued to live my ordinary life. But a fortune-teller was always in my mind, and sometimes I was so upset, that I could hardly walk, eat and even give any signs of life. With the lapse of time I was getting a grasp of the situation, when finally I decided to find that fortune-teller and pay her all out, otherwise I’ll slowly die down.
I had often seen her on the main street of our town, so I've decided to go there.
  To be continued…
