The Guilty Lawyer by Maria Bogdanova

Friday, TV show `In search of truth` on ABC with John Irvin.
`You know, Greg, in case of committing crime everybody wants to have you as a lawyer. You have never lost a lawsuit!  It`s incredible! `

`Thank you, John, but I merely do my job`
`No, don`t be too modest. Everybody knows that you can pull out even the real murderer whom police caught with blood on his shirt and knife in his arm. There is nothing impossible for you`.
Greg, the most successful, well-paid and young lawyer in New York, indifferently shrugged keeping perfect mask on his aristocratic face. He has envious persons and worshippers and he doesn`t care about both of them. He is not a good guy and not a bad. He is an advocate. If he sees that he can win the case he takes it and guiltiness of client is not a problem until money go to his account.
`I think that every person has a right to be defended. Not guilty until his or her guilt has been proven – presumption of innocence. `
Greg is acting confident, he smiles graciously, looks straight into journalist`s eyes not avoiding his penetrating gaze. His entire figure is screaming about richness and self-assurance. A lot of people don`t like him, but the majority are afraid to have a deal with him, because he is a man with zero moral principles.
`Yes, you are right: we can`t judge until we have proofs. But there are a lot of evidences against your new client who is accused of killing his ex-lover Angela Grain. The witness saw them together half-hour before she was smothered. Police found telephone calls where he was threatening to kill her and her daughter if she didn`t come back to him. And the last and most important thing: he has no alibi.
Do these arguments let us to believe that Bill Torn killed Angela cruelly?
`Bill didn`t murder Angela. And Angela is not as innocent as journalists want her to be. She was married, had a child and yet she was having an affair for three years. She promised my client to leave husband and when instead of that she dumped him, he was in despair.  She fooled him; she was playing with his feelings.
`And isn`t this enough for committing murder? `
Greg crosses his arms and smiles ironically.
`My client is innocent, John, and we`re gonna prove this in court. He loved this woman, if he could die instead of her, he would have done it. `
`I guess we`ll find out who smothered Angela very soon: the court will be on Monday. And the last question: what did you feel when you heard that Angela`s daughter, Mia, tried to kill herself? `
Greg expected this question, but for one second he stiffened. But when he start talking his voice didn`t tremble, though the smile disappeared.
`I was shocked. It must be hard to lose near relation. My heart goes out to her.`
`Thank you for sparing time, Greg.  It was Greg Vins, lawyer number one in the Time`s list of the most successful lawyers. `
Greg goes to the exit, envious looks follow him. In the car he makes an important call.
`How are you? `
`I`m fine. You don`t need to call every hour, because I`m not going to do something stupid again. `
`I worry about you. If not the journalists I would have come to visit you. But it`s
unsafe. `
`I miss you`
`Miss you too. Next Monday everything will be over and we`ll flee from New York. I always wanted to see Europe. What do you think about it? `
`I can`t wait to leave this town. I`m tired. Greg, the nurse will give me the drugs in few minutes. She shouldn`t see me talking on the telephone. `
`Ok, I`ll call you later`.
Greg hangs-up. He goes to see Bill Torn even if in fact Bill is not his real client.
