What Do They Hide There by Maria Ignatieva

Don’t go into the wood, they said.
Those who do don’t come back, they said. Well we’ll see. What can possibly be there? Beasts? Beasts never roam near the path. They are no enemies if you don’t meet them, you know.
Don’t go into the wood, they said. No place for people, they said. Then who’s it for? No harm if I take just a few steps along the path. Like that. See? No beasts. Bet I can go even further. Nothing will happen while the sun is shining. Sun is safety, that’s what they say. Well then there is sure a ton of safety around here.
What’s all the bustle about anyway? Nothing here except for the plain ol’ trees.
Not yet.
I mean, even if anything happened, I would run away like no big deal. I can outrun anyone in the town, even Tommy, and Tommy is, like, thirteen, he even goes to school. Beasts don’t even go to school. If they try and bite me, I will just run away.
There will be no need to.
“Don’t go into the wood, don’t go into the wood,” what are they trying to hide there? No need to hide all those trees if you ask me. But you don’t trick me just like that, no sir, I know there must be something, or else what is the path for, hm? Paths are for people.
It once was.
This wood of yours is no fun, that’s what I’ll tell them. Didn’t even meet one beast here. Wow, I’ve never seen a tree like this before! I could live here. This whole wood could be mine. I could build a house out of sticks and hunt the beasts and no one would know because I’d always be home before dinner and–
Just a bit further.
Oh hi, do you live here? I didn’t know anyone lived here. They say this wood is danger, you know that? But not for me because I can run fast. Do you see beasts often? Is this wood yours? Where is your house?
Welcome.
