Always and Forever by Kate Cherniakh

Today was a very important day.
My heart was quickly pounding, and my stomach was filled with butterflies. I was extremely nervous and excited at the same time. I was getting ready to what felt like a first date. I wore my best tuxedo and used her favorite cologne «Clive Christian 1872» that filled the entire room with spicy sent that had some notes of lime.
As I was about to leave the apartment, I saw her photo. Sarah was smiling and I felt as if she was calling me back to those carefree summer days. Her sweet laugh was ringing in my ear, and it brought back those hazy memories: sleepless nights that we spent talking about our future, our dreams and hopes. We shared every single thought and at the same time understood each other without any words. Only around her I was myself I didn’t feel the need to lie or pretend. We had our whole lives ahead of us… But when she got sick, I finally realized that tomorrow might never come, that there is only now.
Finally, doctors allowed me to visit her, and I went to that shabby old building. It has been two weeks since she got her surgery. When I walked into the hospital room Sarah was dreaming: «Sleep honey… You need some rest. » I moved a little closer to the love of my life for some reason she felt it and her deep blue eyes started glowing. Suddenly that familiar worm smile bloomed across her face bringing spring back to my old heart: «Happy 50th anniversary honey!»
For half a century we were together against the whole world. To this day we love each other unconditionally. And I know that everything will be aright because we made a commitment and promised: « Always and forever!»
