The Sea Princess by Elizaveta Groza

In a faraway land
lived a strong and brave captain called Nilsson. Since the childhood he was attracted to the sea with all his heart and dreamed about exciting and breathtaking adventures within a space of the open waters, full of dangerous and mystery. He wanted to be a captain and his wishes coincided with his father`s thoughts about Nilsson`s future. Gregory, that was the name of Nilsson`s father, who was a distinctive shipwright, took 3 years to built a wonderful wooden ship for his little son. Nilsson was bestowed with it in his 18th birthday. The young captain adored steering and feeling the breeze touching his face, breathing in the smell of the sea and observing an incredible endless of blue. He was grateful to his father for such a valuable gift.
By the time Nilsson got old he had collected lots of stories about his sea adventures to retell. They all were kept in the diaries Nilsson had been writing during his life to save for his heirs all the memories about the events he had faced before. There were stories about friendship and hate, courage and cowardice, a story about ship crushing and surviving in a fierce storm. However, the most mysterious and memorable one was about love. Captain Nilsson reread this story to his son, Will, over and over again.
“Aren’t you bored of it?” asked Nilsson every time it was Will`s time for bed. “Let me read you any other story, darling”
“No, dad, read “The Sea Princess” again" was begging Will with puppy eyes.
Next moment captain Nilsson sat down on the corner of his son's bed and opened one of his diaries (the one with a small emblem of a gold mermaid on the cover) to start reading. It was a story about awful pirates and their beautiful captive, who was rescued by Captain Nilsson. Despite Will knew the plot, he was always interested and fully immersed in the story. He perfectly fell asleep to it.
Captain Nilsson was 49 that time and he was sad about his age for his loneliness. He had already spent almost a half of the entire century, devoting all his love only to the sea. Despite the fact that Nilsson understood his loneliness was the choice he made when decided to tie his life with a ship travelling around the world, he still wanted to fall in love with a woman and even had children. Spending life in the open waters was pleasure for Captain Nilsson. However, he needed and wanted to share these feelings with someone else – with a woman, who would support him and be his partner in war and peace. He wanted to be proud of his children likewise his father was proud of him.
One day Captain Nilsson faced a pirates' ship. It wasn't the first time he met this cruel and ruthless rovers, but it was the first time he happened to free their captive. The fight was bloody. The pirates who were obsessed of an unquenchable thirst for money wanted to have all captain Nilsson’s gold till the last coin. They were vehemently seeking for lucre in every corner and chest. Finally Captain Nilsson boarded the pirates' ship. It was closely his win in this fight; however the pirates' captain was still alive.
The sun was setting down. While the fight on the deck was still on, Captain Nilsson went down to the pirates` ship`s hold to find the pirates` captain. Through the wooden floorboard`s creak and saber`s jingle Nilsson heard a cry. He was searching for its source, keeping his ears open. Behind the wooden barrels full with rum and boxes he found a young woman who was tied up and scared to death. Her lean body was shaking from cold. Her long blond braided hair was disheveled. Her wide green eyes, with kind and innocent look, got red and were full of tears. Nilsson watched the tiny salty droplets slowly sliding down her cute plumb cheeks and soaking in a dirty yellowed piece of cloth – a gag in her mouth. This woman was still compelling and with no doubt the prettiest creation Nilsson had ever seen in his life. Suddenly, as if being bewitched, the captain felt a burst of hate for those horrible and sadistic pirates who could ever do this rigidity to such an angelic woman. He felt a need for revenge. She looked at him with fear in her eyes and cried harder.
“No, no, please, don't be afraid of me” he hurried to calm her down “I won't hurt you. I am going to save you”.
Nilsson took a knife off his pocket and set out to free the captive, but exactly in that moment pirates` captain were going down the wooden ladder straight to the hold, illegibly rumbling something to himself. He was holding a bottle of rum in his right hand and looked like he was going to have fun with the girl. Having noticed Captain Nilsson, he stopped, smiled madly with his yellowed teeth and his dark drunk eyes furiously flashed. It was a disgusting neglected pirate with dirty disheveled grey hair and same long beard. His face and hands were grubby, as if he had never washed them before. However, his soul was tainted and much dirtier than his skin.
The woman screamed into the gag, but Nilsson was fearless. His courage derived from all his disgust, anger and contempt for all these pirates. These feelings had been making Nilsson stronger and stronger day by day and now he had understood the reason – for him to rescue this wonderful innocent woman, to free her from these awful and dishonest pirates, to prevent atrocity and harm they could do to her.
“I can see a guest here, in the hold of my ship” laughed the pirate and drank more. “You want to take my captive? How impolite! Take your own one!”
“She is not yours, let her go!”
“Name a reason why I have to do that” the pirate took a step closer to the captive.
Next moment Captain Nilsson took a step closer to him and confidently answered: “I will kill you otherwise”.
“I won`t be so sure” detractor down the bottle and smashed it on the ship board above the captive`s head. The woman tried to dodge small pieces of glass, but there still fell some on her.
Captain Nilsson vehemently took off a saber and attacked the nasty pirate. The enemy took this battle with strength and mind, despite he was drunk. He injured Nilsson`s arm, however it didn`t break Nilsson down, so the next moment Nilsson took all his courage, felt woman`s support and gratefulness, and pierced the pirate with his saber. The enemy dropped his weapon out of his hand and groaned. The next moment he fell down and died.
Captain Nilsson rescued the woman by cutting the ropes around her arms and legs. She didn`t look like trust him yet, however she was grateful to him with all her heart. She called herself Athena and she turned out to be a lost princess of the Antillia Island.
“I am grateful for your kindness and compassion, captain” said Athena and hug her rescuer.
Captain Nilsson brought the princess back home, and took care of her during the entire road to the Antillia till Athena fully recovered.
“You can find a shelter here at any time” said the princess after their arriving to the island.
Captain Nilsson accepted her proposal and visited Athena even more often than she expected. They became soul mates lately, and one day they fell in love with each other.
Nilsson finished the story. Will was already sleeping and dreaming. Nilsson touched up his blanket and kissed his forehead.
“Sweet dreams, son” said he and left the room.
“Is he sleeping now?”
“Yes, my love” Nilsson gently kissed Athena “Felt asleep to “The Sea Princess” again. It is a perfect story, isn`t it?”
“Don`t remind” Athena smiled.
