The small white cup with strong espresso
had fallen on the floor of the pretentious coffee house. The startled waiter nervously rushed to clear the flour, apologizing and promising to bring a new cup of coffee in a few minutes.
- I don’t need the coffee any more! I will write complaints about your dull café. You won’t see me here again – screamed the woman whose coffee were spilt on the floor.
Each waiter in this coffee house knows that it is an outright lie. This lady visits this café every morning during a few recent years and each waiter in the café don’t want to service her because it’s always challenge. There were cases when this woman complied on the coldness in the building or on the stuffiness in there. Sometimes the coffee seemed to her to be cold, and she compelled the waiter to take her another one. When barista had mistaken and added the milk to her espresso she made a scandal that the manager decided to not take the money wanting her to leave the coffee house.
Scarlet goes out of the café. Her morning was spoilt. Again. Why all these people can’t just do their work in the right way. Why all people around are so foolish and clumsy and every day one of these creatures spoils her mood.
Scarlet is tall, slim woman with long blonde hair. She is dressed in a stylish white pantsuit. On her legs she has the black high heels shoes and there is a small leather purse in her hands. Her lips are perfectly painted by red lipstick and long eyelashes covered big expressive eyes.
She could be called a very beautiful woman but her sharp sight of dark eyes was alerting, her nervous moves and pursed lips radiated malevolence and her voice was like a siren. She was always dissatisfied with something. It could be the service in a restaurant or the work report from colleagues. To gain favour from her was just equal to ability to fly.
In the 27 years she achieved a big success in the working area. She works as a manager of financial department in the international company. She was hated by her collogues, but nobody could argue against the fact that she was the best in her job.
Scarlet heads to her black Ford that she has bought for her own money. She drives out of the parking and rides to the office. During her travelling she was moaning about the other drivers who disturbed her, road signs which also disturbed her and the time that ran out too fast. Finally, Scarlet pulls up to the office. It’s a tall all-glass building in the city centre, that belongs to the big business complex. Only the most successful companies can afford themselves to rent an office here.
Scarlet moves to the front door, which opens automatically (too slow in Scarlet’s opinion) and comes in the building. She doesn’t greet the smiling receptionist, but he has already got used to such her behaviour. Scarlet heads to the elevator to go up to the 11th floor. The woman comes into the office and all conversations immediately go quiet.
She quickly inspects the space with her sharp sight and notices that the place of one girl is empty. This girl, Sarah, it seems, was employed without Scarlet’s approval, and she really doesn’t like her.
Sarah was so pretty dark-haired girl at the age of 25, of average height and athletic build. She works here only for two months but already has a lot of friends among colleagues. People like her… People like this net, pretty, dumb creature because she just smiles to them. Why such person gets people’s attention and was approved for a good work place of middle financial analyst. This Sarah has already a few times tried to express her opinion, arguing against Scarlet. She will get a huge amount of tasks and a loud scandal when she will appear in the office.
Scarlet heads to her cabinet and loudly closes the door after herself. She has a lot of work before the important meeting with partner company’s representative.
Two hours passed unnoticeably. Scarlet has to go to the conference hall to negotiate with financial director of Delta, Adam Wilson, it seems. Scarlet heard a lot of good feedbacks about him, but he will not be able to impress her. She was confident.
Scarlet enters the hall and there are already a few people in there. And Sarah is also here. What she’s doing here and why she, Scarlet, the manager of the department wasn’t informed about her presence on the meeting.
Sarah speaks with the tall, broad-shouldered man dressed in the expensive, stylish suit. The man turns his head in the Scarlet’s direction and looks at her from head to foot and smiles to her. His eyes are pale and lighting up with intelligence and kindness:
- We were waiting for you, miss Adams. Nice to meet you!
- Can we proceed immediately with the business? I have a lot of work.
- Sure. Maybe you want some coffee before we start.
Scarlet remembered her experience with the coffee in the morning and got to understand that she really wants the cup of coffee.
- Maybe I’ll drink some.
- Steve will serve us in a few moments. What sort of coffee do you want?
- Espresso please.
- Perhaps you would be so kind to say “Thank you” after somebody does something for us.
Scarlet was shocked. Nobody never dared to say to her something like that. It was so outrageous, but she didn’t want to quarrel with such an important person. She remained silent, with difficulty, but remained.
- Let’s move to our business – says she calmly.
Maybe man has noticed the change in her mood because he doesn’t say anything about her behaviour.
- Sit down, please, ladies. Sarah has explained to me the core ideas of our strategy for the next…
- Why Sarah was invited to the meeting – interrupts Scarlet because she wants to know the answer right now.
- Because Boris said to me that the Sarah’s vision is so objective in his opinion and he wanted me to discuss some points with her directly
What? Boris? Scarlet’s supervisor thinks that the vision of this creature is better than her, Scarlet’s one.
- So, I would like to continue. To my mind, we need fresh view on the strategy and creative approach to the solving of possible problems. I have read your proposals Sarah, but as for me, Sarah’s approach is really more suitable for this pro…
Scarlet wasn’t able to withstand. She stood up so fast and in a few steps left the conference hall. She can’t believe. Her ideas were discarded in favour of this small creature.
She got used to being the best: the smartest, the most beautiful, the most successful. Other people were just unfortunate stupid creatures, instruments in her hands. She achieved everything on her own. Why she isn’t respected by all of them. Why they respect persons like Sarah.
She storms out the office building and sits behind the wheel of her Ford. After half an hour in the road, she achieved the house her penthouse is in. She goes up by the elevator and go in the spacious flat. The first direction – the fridge, where is still a lack of yesterday’s wine. She takes the bottle and heads to her big terrace. There is a pack of cigarettes. She smokes when nobody sees her. She wants them to think that she is perfect.
Her mother never though like that. There was always somebody better than Scarlet. Her classmates, daughter of her friend or just girls on the street. However, Scarlet always got the best grades in the class, she was the soloist in the dance group and one of the prettiest girls in the school. But the mother was not interested in this. She wanted her to be perfect. And she has become perfect. For herself.
She, the perfect woman, returns every day to the empty big castle in the expensive district of the city. She, perfect, wastes her evenings with books or movies about all these non-perfect people and dreams only for one. To be perfect for somebody else.
