The Loud Silence by Anna Anykiienko

The room was quiet and dark,

only the bright lightning outside highlighted two figures sitting in the silent distress. The young woman was sitting on the chair and was raising her head uptime to times. She was trying to start an uncomfortable conversation but changed her mind each time. Each time you can hear how she takes a breath, but then suddenly stops and exhales.

The older woman was sitting opposite in a chair, her gaze fixed on the bookshelf. Her eyes were cold and hostile. Her wrinkled, work-tanned hand tapped the wooden arm of the chair. She was breathing through her teeth alikea wild animal that was full of rage.

The room silence got broken.

“Stop it. If you want to say something - stop being such a coward”- the old woman said without raising her glance.

“M..mom, I..”- young woman said uncertainly.

“Linda. Why? Just tell me why.”

“Mom, I had no idea what to do, I am not ready for that..”

“So you think I was ready for you being born? You think I wanted to have kids when I was 18?”

“W-what, no, you don’t understand, I can’t afford to have that child, I am alone, Jim left me and..”

“Linda, find the goddamn job and keep that goddamn child. Or you think it is easy to leave THAT in the past? No, Linda, I would never forgive you for that. YOU will never forgive yourself for that.”- mother said in a cold tone, only in some words you can hear a panic and hysterical laughter.

“But I am 19, I want to go on. I don’t want that child, that would be better for her to find another family and..”- Linda said while nervously wrinkling the fabric of her skirt.

“Her? You know the gender?»- the older woman interrupted immediately.

«Yes, I didn’t want to, but the doctor told me..”- Linda sighed and looked at the floor.

“I cannot get my head over it. Linda, you are so lucky, that God decided to gift you that child, even though you do not deserve any happiness in that life. You are pathetic, narcissistic. Jesus Christ, why my daughter is like that, I never raised a monster. Any choice you do, anything you say, makes no sense. I have a feeling that you are the monster, as your father was. And I would..”

“…Would what, mom? Don’t you ever talk about my father like that! And God? You serious? If your that Christian of yourself, so why would you take that child and raise it by yourself?”-

“Don’t you dare to talk to me like that, you know that I am..”

“…You are innocent? Or maybe you always find a new illness for yourself so that everyone will feel sorry for you? Maybe you live in a world where only you exist, and you try to justify all your sins and terrible things to God? No, you would not decide what i am going to do.”

“Oh.. so now we talk like that..”- the mom laughed-“You are going to keep that child whether you like it or not.”- said in a loud voice.

“Or what? What are YOU going to do?”

The argument was interrupted by a man who entered the room.

“Okay, Ms Linda, are you ready to fill papers for the adoption?”- he looked at the woman and said with a mock smile.
