Unexpected Meeting by Sophia Chernenko

Lily was living in a black and white film.

Everything was monochrome. Buildings, people, transport, and even the grass looked so lifeless and grey. And the girl looked the same as the dull, dreary sky. Her face was pale and drained, dark shadows lingered under her eyes, her grey school uniform sat on her like a needle, and only her red hair stood out from this austere atmosphere.

This day was not going to be anything unusual, it was gloomy like all the previous days. Lily, tired after a gruelling day, walked from school to the shop. As much as she didn't want to, she had to go because at home there was perekotipole in the fridge. As luck would have it, dark clouds began to gather, foretelling of the coming downpour. The girl had to speed up to avoid the rain.

Before she reached the shop, however, she heard a low squeak beside her. Lily stopped abruptly, afraid that she had accidentally stepped on something. Looking a little closer, in the bushes, she spotted something incomprehensible, looking like the pom-pom of a winter hat. As she got closer, the creature began to walk towards her. Out of the darkness, a small red kitten looked at her, which with its look and colouring reminded her of the first spring rays after a long winter. Indeed, such were the thoughts that slipped through the girl's mind. Kitty so strongly stood out from this whole grey mass, that it felt as if the cat's appearance blinded the girl a little.

-Kitty, why are you so frightening - smilingly said the girl, as she reached out her hand to this tiny baby. - What are you doing here alone?

She was answered by the meowing of a kitten, which began to rub itself happily against her outstretched hand.

-He was so cute, - she said, gently stroking his ears.

Though scratching such a cute cat was a pleasant pastime, but food would not buy itself. So Lily was about to get up and leave, as the kitten suddenly clung to the girl's trousers with its paws and began to squeak loudly.

-Oh, come on. You want to come with me? - She was answered by another meow. - Why do you think I'm one of your own because of the colour of my hair? You and I are almost like twins, aren't we? Well, then, welcome to my family, my newfound relatives. I'm going to name you Garfield, just like the cat from the film," the girl said, laughing.

Lily gently and carefully took the kitten in her arms and walked along with him. Both of them shone brightly in the sun, dazzling passers-by. That's how unexpectedly, two ginger friends found each other. They will have many more different events in the future, but that's another story.
