They needed to be careful
so as not to fail the mission. Julia moved ahead and Max followed her steps. They hang their heads low as they came closer to the house. There was a dark spot large enough to fit them both between the barn and the window of a bedroom of the target. They settled in position completely unnoticed.“Target in sight. Are you ready, Max?”
Max took out his journal, a pen, a dim flashlight and an old camera.
“Yes, ma’am.” He answered Julia.
“I have a feeling about this one.”
Max looked at the target through the bedroom window. Mistress Karlova was doing her nightly routine: drinking spiked black tea, while knitting and listening to audiobooks. Max bit down on his pen. It annoyed the hell out of Julia.
“What is it?”
“It’s just, I don’t know, ma’am, a sweet woman like her? I couldn’t imagine her working for those god-awful people.”
“You’re a smart kid. But you need to understand that it’s probably just a disguise. They always appear to be good people so that you will trust them. Don’t be fooled. And collect evidence, we will need it”.
Julia watched Mistress Karlova pause her audiobook to take a call.
“I know you are guilty. I will bring justice upon you.”
Max focused his camera on Mistress Karlova, he shifted to get a better angle of her face and knocked down a ladder leaned against the barn. A horrible sound of metal clashing pierced the evening air.
“Who’s there?!” Mistress Karlova shouted. Julia and Max got up to flee, but before they left the yard
the suspicious target Mistress Karlova saw them.
“Get out! God, you’re awful, naughty kids! Julia, I will tell your father and then!”
They ran from her house, laughing and panting, until they couldn’t hear the outraged shouts. They stopped near the school stadium.
“I think that’s enough for today.” Max said.
“Yeah, I’m already late for dinner.”
“Hey, can I be the boss tomorrow?”
Julia frowned.
“Fine. I’ll be the junior sergeant. But if you will be haughty again I won’t play with you!”
