Neil Burns loved being a detective.
Not because it is noble, not because here was a chance to punish the evil, but because serving in the police meant being a “legal” mafia. The well-respected Detective Burns' work routine consisted of collecting fees from those who did not want their eatery to be closed because of poppy seed buns and tossing whoever their superiors ordered to jail. Six months ago, on night duty, Neal was signing protocols and clearing out the rest of the paperwork when he was distracted by a phone call. He answered with a sleepy and slightly annoyed “Hello”. In response, the man heard the frightened voice of Lisa, his wife.“Neil, someone is walking around the house, the kids heard noise in the backyard. I'm afraid to go and check. The boys and I locked ourselves in a room upstairs”
Neal had not yet fully looked up from the papers did not immediately understand what Lisa was saying.
“Wait, honey. I don't understand. Who is walking around the house?”
“Several people are walking around our site. At first I thought there was only one man, but now I see at least four guys and one girl near the forest from the window in Max's room”
“Are they armed, Lisa?”
“I can’t see. But I guess they didn’t come here for a picnic,” Lisa chuckled nervously. Then she continued, “Wait... Fuck...”
Neal got nervous.
“What? What happened?”
“I heard a rumble downstairs. It must be the door from the backyard. They broke it. What the hell?”
“Lisa! Whatever happens, don't hang up! I'm on my way! The police are coming!”
“They cut out the lights, Neal”
“Try not to panic, I'm on my way”
“Okay, Neil. I ... We love you”
“I love you too”
Neal heard the voices of his children, Max, Jerry and Keith, on the phone.
“Mom, what's going on?” “We're scared!”, they echoed in a whisper. He also heard the voice of Lisa, who whispered to calm the crying children. It was clear from his wife's voice that she was terrified. In the telephone receiver came whispers, rustles and rumblings in the distance. Neal immediately brought the entire police station to heel. He himself drove out in his car, followed by 3 police cars. Detective Burns was so nervous he could barely make out his own thoughts, but he could still keep an eye on what was happening on the other end of the still ongoing phone call. Lisa screamed. Neal heard two gunshots, the crunch of wood and loud screams.
“Lisa! No! God! No please!”
Neal burst into tears of despair. Tears flooded his eyes, he could not make out where he was going. The Burns lived outside the city and it was a long way to go. The detective wiped his eyes and realized that he was already halfway. Then he looked on the phone and saw that the call was over. In rage and fear for his family, Burns pressed the gas pedal all the way and in half an hour he arrived at the place that had been his home this morning. Before him appeared a horrifying picture of the mutilated corpses of Max, Jerry, Keith and Lisa lying on the lawn outside their burning house. The bodies of his children and his wife were covered in blood, chopped up, fired at and cut up. Due to despair and pain, Detective Burns could not even get to his feet. The police arrived. They found him sobbing, roaring and in some frenzied hysterics. Suddenly, he heard a laugh that made him look up towards the forest and in the light of the fire Neal saw the figure of a girl who, holding a long ax on her shoulders and leaning on it with her hands, watched the torment of the young detective. She stood there to make sure the man discovered what was in store for him and then turned around and left. Burns tried to get up and run after her, but lost consciousness and fell to the ground...
…
Six months have passed since that event. Neil Burns has grown thin and drank heavily since then. Colleagues were afraid to even approach him. This is not strange: with what words can one express condolences on the occasion of the brutal murder of the whole family? Only his close friend and colleague Harvey Engels communicated closely with him. And although during the period of binge Burns more and more acrimoniously joked about the last name of Harvey, he, as a true friend, still loved Neal and worried about him like no other. Today his anxiety has reached a new level, for the simple reason that yesterday Harvey pulled Burns out of the bathroom, where the latter wanted to get into the bathtub with the hairdryer turned on. Engels spoke about the suicide attempt to his quirky wife Lucy, and she, endlessly repeating that everything is happening for a reason, remembered that she had seen ads all over the city about a charming girl-psychologist who helps to cope with the pain of loss and takes a little for sessions, since she had moved to the city recently and wants to secure a clientele. Harvey thought it a good idea to identify Burns to a psychologist. If a specialist does not help him soon, it may end tragically. In addition, Engels saw other advantages in the situation. The psychologist was a girl, perhaps Detective Neil Burns will be able to fix his personal life. The next morning, Harvey found a psychologist advertisement matching Lucy's description right next to the front door of the police station. He called the number and agreed with a girl with a pleasant voice about a session tomorrow, at 16 PM.
Harvey Engels, having entered the police station, did not find Neil Burns at his desk. Harvey checked the toilet and met his friend there in tears and drunk.
“You need help, Neil”
“Fuck you, you fucking communist”
“You idiot, I'm serious. I don't want to see you on the brink of death anymore. Please. For my sake, we'll go tomorrow wherever I tell you, and you'll sit out at least one session”
“Have you decided to send me to the shrink?”
“Yes, to a psychologist”
“Ah, fuck it, I'll go. Maybe they'll at least give me a prescription for Wallium or Codeine”
“I'll keep an eye on how much you take”
“Pain in the ass”, Neal chuckled.
“You're doing the right thing, Neal,” Harvey said with several nods and smiled.
“I`ll go get to work”
“Get the fuck out of here” Neal shouted as Harvey was leaving.
Detective Burns looked at himself in the mirror and grinned. He thought “What can you hope for? You`re fucked up. Do it for Harvey, twat. He's been busting his ass for you”…
The next evening Harvey's old Chevrolet drove up to a tall building.
“Shall I come with you?” Engels asked.
“Are you my mommy?” Burns answered rudely as he was getting out of the car.
“Top floor. I'll pick you up in 3 hours,” Harvey replied with a grin.
“Well, thanks Harv. I'm going to have my brains fucked up the ass for 3 hours,” Neal snapped and slammed the door.
Taking the elevator up, Neal met a beautiful, plump blonde woman in business glasses with a mole above her lip and red, brightly painted lips. Her face seemed familiar to the detective. She smiled affably.
“You must be Neal.”
“Yes, I am”
“Nice to meet you, I'm Evelyn”
“And me. Shall we start?”
“Yes, of course. Have a seat, please”
“Thank you”
“Well, Neal, tell me what's bothering you?”
“May I smoke?”
“Yes, you may”
Neal took a drag, being nervously silent, and then continued in a trembling voice.
“Six months ago I lost my family”
“How?”
“They were killed. They were brutally killed”
Neal coughed nervously and apologized.
“I'm sorry...”, Evelyn replied with genuine sympathy.
Neal nodded.
“Do you know who killed your family?”
“No. But I'll sell my soul to the devil to find out”
“What if you never find out the killer's name?”
“I will find out”
Evelyn paused awkwardly.
“Okay. What will you do when you find out?”
“I hope this was a rhetorical question”
“Will you take revenge?”
“Sure”
“How many children have you had, Neil?”
“Three. Three boys, Max, Jerry and Keith”
“Max, Jerry and Keith would like their loving dad to turn into a killer?”
Neal blew out smoke and grinned.
“My living kids would not want this, but their dead bodies would really want me to”
“Do you often think of revenge?”
“Everytime when I'm sober”
“And when you are drunk?”
“I think on suicide”
“Did you try to kill yourself?”
“Yes, I did”
“Do you think the pain will go away if you kill yourself?”
“My pain will die with me”
Evelyn nodded and asked, “Would you like some tea?”
“Yes, please”
They were speaking incessantly until the end of the session. There were questions that Burns dodged, but most of the time he was very talkative. At the end, Evelyn led the man to the elevator. Neal asked, “Will I see you again?”
“It depends on you”
“I would like to see you again”
“Great. Then let's do it in a week. Goodbye, Neil”
“Goodbye, Evelyn”
Harvey met Burns downstairs, as promised. He noticed that Neal was interested in what was happening.
“How did you find her?” Neil asked.
“Ads are hanging all over town,” Harvey replied.
“It's funny. I'll see her again”
“Are you better?” Engels asked hopefully.
“Calm down, communist. She's hot. I want to get to know her better”
“Well, at least something,” sighed Harvey.
“I have the feeling that I have known her for a long time. Maybe we met somewhere...”
“I don’t think so. The ad says she just moved to town”
“Come on, you're a detective, Harv,” Neal grinned. “Maybe she's lying? Hiding from someone?”
“She helps you. That`s all that matters”
“Thanks man”, Neal put a hand on Harvey's shoulder.
Neal and Evelyn saw each other twice a week. Progress was evident. Neal stopped drinking, to attract Evelyn in the first place, of course, but because of the pain withdrawal too. They became close and Evelyn became very precious to him. After the death of the children and Lisa, the only one who remained with him was Harvey, and this girl became a ray of hope for a new normal life.
Five sessions passed and on the sixth Evelyn got up from her chair before the end of the session and walked up to Neal from behind. She stroked his head, and he took her hands in his and kissed them. Evelyn, holding Neal's hands, lifted him from the chair and kissed him...
This was Neal's first intimacy since Lisa's death. They were lying with Evelyn in her loft and Burns could not take his eyes off her. The blonde beauty slept nonchalantly. He didn't know how he felt, but he knew he needed her. He began stroking her hair, and she woke up:
“Can`t sleep?”
“Evelyn, I will never let anyone hurt you”
Evelyn gave him a trusting, hopeful look and a kiss.
“Me too. Sleep, Neil”
The next morning, Neil Burns returned to work. There were a lot of things to do. Today it was necessary to jail a good policeman who did not want to get dirty with the police commissioner business.
Harvey was delighted to see his friend sober at work. Neal even smiled at the sight of his desk. Detective Burns got down to business again and the working hours flew by. In the evening they were to meet with Evelyn. Neal was about to start a new life.
Towards evening, on the way to his girlfriend's house, the detective bought a huge bouquet of roses and rushed to his babygirl. Neal stomped impatiently in the elevator, and as soon as the doors opened, he rang the doorbell. It took him a while to notice that the front door of the loft was open. It was dark inside. Neal pulled out his gun and entered quietly. In the room, he noticed Evelyn sitting quietly in a dark corner in her chair. She was sitting next to the window, so the outline of her face was visible.
“Evelyn? Honey, why are you sitting in the dark?”, Burns asked a little nervously.
“I am preparing a surprise for you” the girl answered quietly and calmly.
“What kind of surprise, baby? I'm so excited”
Evelyn turned on the nightlight on the table next to the window. Neal could see her eyes clearly now. Her look was unpleasant to him. Evelyn had always looked at him with a twinkle in her eyes, and now there was nothing but contempt in them.
“I'm overjoyed that you didn't recognize me, Mr. Burns. Keeps my idea of all you, cops, on track”
Evelyn got up from the chair. She put her hands in her hair and took off her wig. Then she took a damp napkin from the table and wiped off the bright red lips and the painted mole above her lip, “Lisa had one like that, right?”
Neal froze. Evelyn smirked and pulled off her hairnet, revealing the girl he had seen so long ago that he had forgotten her name in front of Detective Burns' eyes. But Burns could not forget her eyes.
“You?”
“Surprise, Mr. Burns”
The detective only managed to say “what the hell” before he was twisted and thrown to the floor by two men. Taking away the weapon, they handcuffed him and put him on his knees. Looking around, he noticed two guys to his left and two thugs behind. Those behind him pointed their weapons at Burns.
The girl's hand grabbed his chin, “Look at me, motherfucker. Do you remember who I am? Oh, you do remember, you bastard? Remember how you locked me up for something I didn't do? You, scum, locked me in jail for maniacs for killing my rapist father. You, lying cocksucking bitch, framed me for the murder of my boyfriend and my mother. Why? Because my dad was a cop... What was the reason for this faggoty love of yours, huh? What, you felt sorry for a cop with 30 years of abuse of authority? Felt sorry for the memory of your friend? Ha-ha… But there was no pity for the girl, who at the age of 16 will go to prison for cruel murderers and rapists after she was regurarly raped by her own father since 12, and after she lost the ones she loved. It's good that in prison I was not the only one who understood that I was innocent, she looked at the enforcers behind Neal. “Do you remember the name of the girl you were absolutely not sorry for?”
Neal was silent and looked into the girl's eyes.
“What kind of scum you are... You disgust me…Well, Mr. Burns, I will remind you a little later. Now we play. Do you like toys?”
The girl took out Kit's toys from the closet opposite the table. Neal tried to pull free, but was immediately grabbed from behind.
“You bastard! Mad bitch! Murderer! I'll grind you into powder, you cunt!”
“Keith really liked the plush giraffe, he didn’t want to let it go, even when I cut off his hand,” Evelyn said smiling. Neal shouted “Shut up! Shut up, you crazy psychotic whore!!!” but Evelyn would not listen to him. In the end, he just burst into tears of helplessness.
Seeing this, Evelyn said, “And my boys liked your Lisa. She was intractable at first, but then when they gagged her with a cock, it didn't really matter”. Neal tried to pull free again but a knife was put to his throat. Burns was so miserable that he couldn`t stop the tears running down his face.
“Raise your head, pig. Your whining annoys me”. Evelyn kicked Neal in the face. He fell and she continued to kick him in the stomach. “I'm tired, go on, guys,” the girl said, and the others started beating him. Neal felt nothing. He wanted to die so that his torment would end.
“Okay, that's enough! Mama tells you have to share,” Evelyn shouted, and the thugs stopped.
“So, dear detective Neil Burns, it's time to say goodbye. You were not very good in bed, by the way. I feel sorry for Lisa… How did you say it? “My pain will die with me”? This is where you are wrong. Your pain will not die as long as I am living, here you can trust me. I'm sure that I was not alone who was put behind the bars on false charges. I’ll stuff each corrupt cop with steel and lead and send you to hell to fry”.
Neal looked into the eyes of his killer for the last time. She pulled out a huge ax, already familiar to the detective.
“Remember, dear Burns, my name is Beatrice Hintsman,” said the girl with the ax raised above the man's head. One powerful blow to the notorious detective Neil Burns blew half of the skull, but Beatrice continued to chop it. She turned the body of a negligent policeman into mince and then wiped the blood off her forehead with a damp cloth. Suddenly Beatrice smiled, when she noticed a bouquet of crimson roses, which her deceased lover dropped on the threshold of the loft. She picked up the bouquet and tossed it to the remains of Neil Burns' body.
“Rest in hell, my love”...
The next day, the mutilated corpse of one of the city's best detectives was found in the loft of his girlfriend, Evelyn Drumond. A bouquet of red roses and a huge sharp ax were found near the body. An investigation is underway.
