Matilda by Maria Samovarova

Matilda loved when people complimented on her appearance.
She smiled and whispered: “Oh, stop it you! That’s just Gucci/Fendi/Chanel!”. Matilda also loved when people marveled at her elegance and ladylike manners. She shrugged and told that this was because of her origin - an ancient genus of English graphs. All men dreamed of marrying her. “What a perfect match!” – they thought. But what Matilda really loved was lying about all of this. She ate lie for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. She could not miss the moment to lie. LIE LIE LIE. She lied even to her beloved cat! When he made terrible hunger sounds she just brushed him off with the “feed is over” phrase. In fact, she was just too lazy to get up from sofa!
Her first lie was at the age of 5 when she broke her mother’s expensive lipstick. She just pushed it on her younger sister. From that moment Matilda realized that she could get away with anything in her life thanks to lie.
In school Matilda called herself “an orphan” just to get good grades and special treatments. For instance, she lied to PT teacher about her “weak heart” simply because she didn’t want to exercise. Her classmates shared their own food with her due to “regular starving”. “Transport delays” was Matilda’s favorite excuse for being late . In reality, she lived in 5 minutes walk from the school!
Once in a while, she could get caught on her cheating, but in few seconds she justified herself with a new lie. If in school she could fail sometimes, in college she transformed into ‘the perfect liar’! Matilda went through boys like they were toys, thanks to the same lie. She could smoke weed before classes and tell her friends that insomnia is the reason of her red eyes. She ,after all, cheated on her final exams and got the highest score. What a lucky bitch!
Now Matilda is 32. She works as an administrator in a local café, shares a flat with strange Indian, dresses up in second-hand shops and dreams about true love. Her life is a bit another, but one thing remained unchanged – she still lies!
Once while relaxing in the swimming pool she noticed handsome face above the water. He was swimming with a breaststroke from one side of the pool to another. He moved so fast that Matilda got excited. Her sexual life has been inactive for 3 years already. God, she wanted this guy. She wanted him so badly that was ready to do anything to get him. Even to stop lying.
Matilda started swimming twice a week in her best swimsuit with her ever best done make-up. She has even learned how to swim with a breaststroke. Unfortunately this guy didn’t notice it. He was fully immersed into his sport. Matilda was in despair. She could not understand why, why, why he was so blind? Was she unattractive? Old for him? She thought she looked amazing for a middle-aged woman. Matilda felt like 25 inside!
She hated him. So much. This guy made her stop lying. Day  by day she tried very hard to be honest with people. She really suffered because lie was a necessary part of her life. Matilda hoped that God will notice her changes and reward with a swimmer. And God has heard her.
One day while swimming Matilda got a cramp. She was disabled. The pain was so hard that she could not even cry for help. Slowly she got lost the water. Silence.
Fortunately, beloved swimmer was not far from her. Poor Matilda was saved! She almost lost her consciousness for the second time when she opened her eyes. Swimmer! Boy, how happy was she. Suddenly a voice behind  her  back interrupted her excitement. “How old is she?” “Miss, how old are you?” Doctor. Damn! Matilda’s  heart hammered , her body started to shake. She could feel the bitter taste in her mouth. The taste of upcoming lie. But she changed. She is not lying anymore! Matilda took a deep breath. She glanced at swimmer on the left and on doctor on the right and moaned:
 “I am… thr..thir…twenty five..”
Damn, Matilda!
