The Office by Kate Cherniakh

The office is probably
one of the most important places in your working space.
This is the spot for different meetings, conversations, decisions. And Hanna’s office wasn’t an exception. With its luxurious and at the same time minimalistic design, you could almost feel the greatness and the strength of the person working there. Hanna spent most of her life in this office. It was her second home.
She was always sitting at her desk all alone writing and reading something, answering phone calls. But that day she heard a quite knock on her door: - May I come in? – a trembling employee’s voice asked. - Please Karen, come in. Sit down. – Hanna answered biting her lip. (Okay now I need to gather all the strength and just do it!)
- Did something happen? (I can’t believe it. I’m finally getting a promotion.
I’ve worked so hard to deserve it!)
- No. Not at all. We just have to talk about you’re…
Suddenly Karen dropped her purse and a photo with a little girl holding a colorful
balloon fell on the ground. - Is it you’re?
- Yes, this is my daughter. – Karen warmly replied. – Kinds grow up so quickly. It feels like only yesterday she was just three. And now she is a sixyear-old lady. (I will finally make my sweetie proud, and I might even afford to buy her a real birthday gift this year.) Do you have kids?
For a moment there was a deafening silence. The only thing you could hear was a clock slowly ticking. - I think we should talk about something more important. (Don’t think about her kids, or you’ll never do it. Why am I constantly changing the subject? It is impossible to get to the point. Okay, concentrate. The sooner the better!)
After a few minutes Karen walked out of the office with runny makeup. And the same thing happened to every single person who entered Hanna’s «second home» that day.
