AVALANCHE by Sofia Kovalchuck

 “You really came.”

“You said it was urgent.”

“It is.”

“Then talk.”

“It’s about Mark.”

“We already went through this.”

“Not the right version.”

“What does that even mean?”

“It means we were wrong about everything.”

“…”

“You remember I went for help.”

“And you left him with me.”

“Yes.”

“That’s what I thought too.”

“Stop doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Making it sound like we’re both confused.”

“We are.”

“No. I’m not.”

“Then tell me exactly what you remember.”

“The storm hit at dusk. Mark was injured. You said you’d go for help.”

“And you stayed.”

“Yes.”

“…That’s not what I remember.”

“What do you remember?”

“You went for help.”

“No. I stayed.”

“…”

“Then why do we both remember the same night differently?”

“I don’t know.”

“Mark’s radio was found yesterday.”

“…So?”

“It still works.”

“After all these years?”

“It recorded everything.”

“…Play it.”

“…”

“You hear that?”

“…That’s my voice.”

“Yes.”

“And that’s yours.”

“…We’re both there.”

“I know.”

“So we were together.”

“Yes.”

“Then who went for help?”

“…”

“No one.”

“What?”

“We never left him.”

“…”

“That’s impossible.”

“Listen again.”

“…”

“It stops at the same point.”

“The avalanche.”

“…”

“There are no footprints leaving.”

“…”

“So the rescue report?”

“Was wrong.”

“Then why did we live like this for seven years?”

“Because someone filed a second report.”

“…Who?”

“Look at the signature.”

“…”

“It’s not ours.”

“…”

“Mark wrote it.”

“…”

“He survived?”

“No.”

“He wanted us to think he didn’t.”

“…Why?”

“Because he knew we would destroy each other otherwise.”

“…”

“So everything we believed…”

“…was written by him.”

“…”

“And we were just acting it out.”

“Yeah.”

“…What do we do now?”

“We stop blaming each other.”

“…”

“For seven years I hated you.”

“I know.”

“I hated you too.”

“…”

“But we were never the problem.”

“No.”

“We were the ones left behind on purpose.”
