Best Story of the Year by Zakhar Manukhov

First time I heard it, it was shock.
I couldn’t believe that it’s true. This foolish snob, which I spent 4 years of literature course with, got the prize for his first novel. I started to remember his course’s works. It was always as bad as you could only imagine. Full of clichés and stylistic errors, his creatures disgusted me. There were always about the same characters: some handsome guy, his silly girlfriend and his enemies. It seemed to me that every new story was the old one, but with different names and places of events. The plot was very simple: handsome guy’s enemies instigate him and kidnap his girlfriend, then he finds them, deals with scoundrels and returns the beloved. It was painful to listen to these masterpieces. His ideas were primitive, but the stories were embellished with some kind of pathos. He always found some nasty epithets, for example, "unsurpassed beauty", "devilishly charming", or "terribly strained". And this layman wrote the best work of the year. Unbelievable!
Hah! I knew it! Finally! I knew something is wrong. ‘Best author of the year was accused of plagiarism’. Disgusting! Oh, how low he felt! It's incredible what a person is ready for the sake of glory… Did he think that no one would know? Fool! Oh, I even feel sorry for the guy. Where should he go now with such a reputation? I don’t know… Self-confidence ruined him!
