The Mistress of Spices by Maria Samovarova

The Spice Shop opens after lunch.
Cheerful owner unlocks heavy doors with a big golden key, uncovers shutters and goes inside the room full of savory aromas of curcuma, star anice, nutmeg, rosemary…
She comes up to shelves, moves glass jars, fills up empty pots, rewrites names and prices, packs herbs in paper bags and bandages them with satin ribbon. They will be purchased the very soon. She has to prepare everything in advance so that customers wouldn’t waste their time.
She switched on the computer. Hmmm, let’s see who she has planned for today. Not many. Only four people: 2 p.m. – a woman, that will need salvia, lovage and marjoram; 3p.m. – a woman, who will purchase brown mustard, Spanish chervil and wild garlic; 4p.m. – a woman, that will search for lavender, tarragon and lad’s love; 5p.m – a man, who thinks that doesn’t need anything, but will come here and buy chili pepper, ginger and cardamom.
She will turn off the computer afterwards, prepare herself fragrant pear lemonade with rosemary and plan a new list of visitors for tomorrow. As usual, after lunch.
The 2p.m. woman was not in a hurry. She was slowly moving around the store, reading annotations to spices... Then asked for a cup of hot chocolate. She had no idea what to buy. But she enjoyed these cute paper packages with satin stripes. And glass jars also. She imagined herself decorating her kitchen with colorful pots filled with different herbs. The 2p.m. woman smiled and asked the owner for salvia, lovage and marjoram.
The 3p.m. woman popped up to the store like a shot. Sweepingly and rashly. She moved quickly, spoke loudly and swang with her hands so much that all pots and jars could fall down and crash. She was running out of brown mustard. It is a must-ingredient at her home. The 3p.m. woman has chosen the biggest jar and also asked for Spanish chervil and wild garlic. She will prepare the most delicious meat tonight! Real jam!
The 4p.m woman thought she came in to the store accidentally. The Spice Shop was not part of her plan at all. She hasn’t been cooking for a long time already. She doesn’t like it and simply because there is no need. But, lavender… It smelled so fantastic that she imagined herself putting it inside her wardrobe. Tarragon and lad’s love? Sounds amazing! And the 4p.m. woman decided to prepare lemonade for dinner. She smiled and asked for the package of lavender, jar of tarragon and pot of lad’s love.
The 5p.m. man was late. He came into the shop a bit confused - thought it was a laundry. Plus, he was in a bad mood today. He has almost reached exit when his attention was drawn to the jar “GINGER”. The 5p.m. man remembered that threw the last piece into tea yesterday. Returned and asked to pack. He received three cute packages with bright satin ribbons: “ginger” for tea, “cardamom” for coffee and “chili pepper” just because it is a must-ingredient for men. Especially for bachelors.
“Success!”-whispered the Mistress of Spices and closed heavy doors with a big golden key. Everything went according to the plan: all guests visited her and happily bought their herbs.
The 2p.m. woman opened her tiny package with lovage. Sweet aroma reminded of her childhood in the countryside. There were delicious cherries and syrupy “Granny Smith” apples. She remembered the neighbor boy who always caught the most beautiful butterflies for her. They released and watched them flying away somewhere westwards…
The 3p.m. woman has marinated wild garlic for a new recipe. She knows loads of them. But this one, she considers to be the best.Wild garlic matches the duck perfectly. And her ex-husband adores it.
The 4p.m. woman used tarragon and lad’s love to prepare a mouthwatering lemonade and shared it with her neighbor. He treated her with homemade orange marmalade, that was wonderfully cooked by his adult daughter.
The 5p.m. man was drinking his coffee with cardamom, while working on the laptop. Stopped for a while and added a pinch of chili pepper. The drink became more piquant at once and the 5p.m. man felt how quickly blood was flowing down his veins.
They didn’t know that the Spice Shop owner put a teaspoon of good luck, a little bit of happiness, a drop of fluke and a pinch of joy to every package. People usually don’t need a lot of spices for a happy being, if you think about it.
Tomorrow she will order a new bunch of customers for her magic shop. And she will move jars, so that visitors could notice the most important ones for them.
In some time she will take her little mirror, hidden somewhere in the attic, and see something that she enjoys watching most of all:
The 2p.m. woman will come to her countryside and by coincidence meet the neighbor boy. They will return home together.
The 3p.m. woman will make up with her ex-husband. She will take her mobile phone and invite him to taste the duck marinated with wild garlic.
The 4p.m. woman will set up her own little coffee shop with loads of different goodies. All the guests will find her exotic lemonade and homemade orange marmalade fantastic. She will marry her neighbor the very soon.
Chili pepper will make the 5p.m. man feeling seek. He will have to call an ambulance. The nurse will quickly calm down  his blood pressure. Next day she will come over to check his health status. In some time he will visit her to tell that he is okay and ask to marry him.
Have you been to the Spice Shop already? Come! But don’t mistake the time you were assigned to…
