“Wake up, № 190620!”
The room was completely empty, surrounded by metal blocks on all sides. The only imperfection on the interior surface was a huge camera on the front wall, which had probably been recording for a long time and from which the calls were most likely coming.
“Please state your name, № 190620. Depersonalization.”
“I am Marko Hurka. Depersonalization.”
It was obvious that something like an AI was talking to the person, not a living organism. This only made the event more frightening. The word “depersonalization” was a code for entering into conscious contact.
“Your rights are fully protected. Do you understand this? Answer ‘Yes’ if you do. You must answer ‘Yes’ to all questions to proceed to the next step of the Lawbreaker Calibration. It is in your best interest to answer thoughtfully and correctly. You have a few seconds before you have to answer each question. Depersonalization.”
“Yes. Depersonalization,” the prisoner answered.
Absurd, a rudiment of Hollywood movies. The suspect probably had nothing to defend himself with.
“You, № 190620, are accused of the terrible tragedy № 87459; have you been notified of this? Depersonalization.”
“Yes. Depersonalization.”
“You have been found guilty of incident № 87459, do you admit it? Depersonalization.”
“Yes. Depersonalization.”
“Say ‘Yes’ if you have no objection to the implementation of the verdict. Depersonalization.”
“Yes. Depersonalization.”
“You are a separatist who attempted terrorism in Utopia City and was immediately detained by the cyber police. Please confirm. Depersonalization.”
“I am not a terrorist,” the № 190620 replied.
“Confirm. Depersonalization.”
“…Yes. Depersonalization.”
“Do you understand that as a dangerous lawbreaker, you are being imprisoned for the safety of other citizens and the New Society as a whole? Depersonalization.”
“I'm just an ordinary person!”
“You are not. Please confirm the information above. Depersonalization.”
“Yes. Depersonalization,” the man sighed sadly. Obviously, this was not his first “justice session”, which is actually an interrogation and elicitation of answers by the authorities.
Unexpectedly, a new question came up that Marko did not expect to receive.
“Are You lying? Depersonalization.”
A few seconds of tension “hung” in the air. Number 190620 seemed to hesitate before answering.
Robots, androids, have usually never appealed to the inner personality. It seemed that this was just another update to the System, improving “filtering” process.
Finally, his lips began to move.
“Yes, I do. I am homo sapiens, a human being, not an irrational mistake of Nature. I am not a depersonalized…”
The sound of machinery and electricity immediately began to emanate from all sides of the jail cell. From a distance, a robotic voice could be heard saying something about personality calibration, which had been completed and yet had achieved another negative result.
One can only wonder what fate befell Marko Hurka, and not just the number, 190620. He will probably have several more attempts to “fix himself” until he gets the status of “for utilization”.
It was still unclear about what exactly prisoner № 190620 lied about, as well as whether he was actually guilty.
