Dead Couples by Zakhar Manukhov

There are some couples which I could call “dead”.
Dead couples are people which do a lot of things together: they live in one place, talk to each other, ask about work, cook and pretend that they’re happy. But to tell the truth, it’s just an illusion, a fiction. These people are lost. They feel confusion, pain, hurt, irritation or just aloofness. But why does it happen to them? The reasons are different. It can be severity of routine, some habits, different values and life plans. Eventually, people can just do not fit together. I’d like to show you one of them. Meet Mark and Sam, a dead couple.
- Hey, honey, I’m home.
- Hey.
- How was your day?
- It was fine. How are you? Jack signed papers, hah?
- He did. You were right.
- Here you go! My congratulations.
- Thanks.
- Okay... Hungry?
- Yeah.
- Baked chicken and rice.
- Good.
- Here you go.
- Thank you. Have you eaten?
- Yeah, I have. Don’t worry.
- Okay…
- Have to hang out clothes.
- Need a help?
- No, thanks. Eat.
- Okay.
- Rice is good?
- Yeah, it’s good. Thank you.
- Okay. Leave the dishes. I’ll wash it in the morning. I feel tired.
- Do you need something?
- No, thanks. Listen, I will sleep in second bedroom. There is more fresh air. Do you mind?
- No, it’s all right. Good night.
- Good night, Sam.
- That’s how couples become dead.
