The Small Things by Margarita Makarova

Craig smiled happily and drunk again.
His karma fell out of the pocket twenty years ago and today was an anniversary of the loss. He was toasting all the good things happened to him from that moment on. “For people!” – he said loudly and raised the glass. Several robots joined his toast. No one ever skipped a possibility to celebrate existence of humans with the glass of motor oil.
Craig spilled the drink. Ticking time bomb in his chest most recently was stumbling. And no wonder. He was working under poor conditions. High level of humidity, endless flow of customers, no breaks for charging made coffee machine the worst place for any robot. This situation became even more complicated when the mechanist, responsible for maintaining, stopped functioning. That was a bad day for the population of coffee machine. They even put salt instead of sugar in several lattes and cappuccinos.
Craig looked around. He saw rusty faces, ready to start the new working day. All of the robots were programmed to love and to assist people without any hesitation. But what people were programmed to?
The dial showed 8:30 and robots took up their positions. They started to serve one customer after another. Today the coffee machine was especially popular and robots were working hard to satisfy customers.
Such a workload was beyond Craig’s ability. The bomb in his chest ticked all the time it was determined to tick and stopped working. Craig fell on the bottom of the coffee machine not able to perform his duties. He was one of the most important robots, responsible for the engine. And without him the machine was out of order.
On the other side of the world a customer was waiting for his coffee. He was in a hurry. He was irritated with the delay. He wanted the coffee machine to work immediately. But it didn’t. The main part of it was broken.
In order to get his coffee faster, the customer pulled the machine with force. He didn’t care for the robots or other creatures. The customer was programmed to obtain.
