was stunned by the sudden message that had woken him up. He took his phone sluggishly and saw Martha`s name on the screen spelling three words: «I am pregnant».
The sun was slowly peeking into the room`s darkness lightening its separate elements bit by bit when Jim`s face had been already illuminating a sparkling smile. He felt a pure happiness. His teeny-tiny apartment didn`t seem as small as it was, the old wooden floor seemed to him not creaky at all and the cold autumn wind that was always blowing off through the window clefts wasn`t as furious. His only desire was to see his beloved as soon as possible in order to divide his inner light into two parts. Jim called off the meeting with his employer, took the money that he had been amassing for half a year and left his room.
Martha was sitting on the window sill smoking her third cigarette and scorching her pregnancy test with an ash. Martha`s face was identical to the deepest feeling of guilt. She felt a total feebleness. Her small under roof room in the rented apartment that she was sharing out with its holder was humid and cold since the permanent autumn rains were demolishing its walls year in year out. She had already made a decision despite her friend`s persuasions. The girl was just humbly waiting to the Mr. and Mrs. Wells` call taking the cigarettes out of the pack one by one.
It was almost midnight when Jim had finally came to Martha`s apartment. He was running around the town all day long in order to find those yellow baby's bootees that his beloved had affectionately looked at two years ago. Jim was staying in front of her door trembling all over. Finally the bell rang. Martha opened the door sluggishly.
The couple was absolutely speechless. Jim was just looking at her with a tender smile keeping the small yellow bootees underhand.
Darling, I have a present for you, - he whispered at last.
So do I, - she answered timidly.
Let`s show it to each other on the count of three, - Jim added with excitement. – One, two, three…
In a moment Jim had kept the yellow bootees in his hands and Martha - a yellow folder with the signed adoption contract in it.
