The Mission by Andrii Lysenko

Bob joined the army on the first day of the civil war.
With this extravagant move heaimed at achieving glory. Bob liked to be told about. Especially flattering it was when large media mention battle he had taken part in. He made his career fabulously fast. Spending every day of his service in cold trenches, he was dreaming about being the general. The one who can afford himself a couple of free hours to sit in a warm manor infront of the fireplace in a comfortable armchair with a glass of whiskey and soda.Bob expressed himself in very short and concise sentences because he loved simplicity in words. On average the campaign was successful. Every day was either calm or victorious.Constantly new county or city was seized. Half a year has gone by since the beginning. It seemed that the horrible warfare came to its end and numerous killings would soon cease to take place at all. However the last one week, our forces unexpectedly lost several battles in a row. They were encircled so that no single soldier could escape. Neither could Bob. He was told to be found dead after being terribly wounded. A few people had known him before he went to the war. But the news spread fast and later on the whole village knew him for his bravery on the battlefield. The funeral took place to which several hundred villagers were invited. It lasted almost one day, prolonged by endless speeches and ceremonies. Afterwards there was a dialog between some of them: “Now that the body is buried, I wonder am I the only one who thought the body inthe coffin looked unnatural as if it was made of wax?”“Yeah, I have also noticed something similar”“Me too, but it thought it was only required makeup”“Hello”, the same dead person was here, alive and energetic, “Please don’t tell anybody except my parents. Tell them I am alive and fine. But I don’t want to bring them troubles hence the information I possess is dangerous. I have to leave forever. We can’t see each other anymore. It’s top secret. If the spies find out they will do harm. Thisis a presidential mission. Now I have to disappear.”But then he hesitated a little and went on:“By the way, the priest spoke convincingly and the weepers were very animated. Ialso liked the line of John about childhood memories of us. To be honest, I was so much moved that I cried. Secretly watching the process from that distant hill, I enjoyed it enough to really want to become dead. Well, that’s all. Have a nice day”, and he quicklyleft in unknown direction.“Bye”, with trembling voices everybody said as one.
