A Cup of Cappuccino and a Piece of a Cheesecake by Garazd Anastasiia

The downtown of New York
was buzzing because it was Monday morning, and everyone was rushing to their offices and other workplaces. This place was full of energy, but it looked restless and hectic. It felt like everyone would go insane any second, but there was only one person that looked carefree and happy-go-lucky. Liza was an art college student, and Monday was a day-off from lectures and studies for her, that is why she was walking down the street in the centre of New York radiating happiness and harmony. Her destination was a small café in the city centre that was only well-known among a few locals, including Liza. She adored this place because of its peaceful atmosphere, but also because of delicious cappuccino and soft, fluffy cheesecakes served in this café. The girl always tried to treat herself with a cup of coffee and a piece of her favourite cake from this fantastic place.
When Liza entered the café, she noticed that there were no visitors, and the only person that was inside the place was Shawn, a barista. It was absolutely usual for the café to be almost empty at this exact time, because it was Monday morning, and everyone was heading to their offices. Liza looked at Shawn and slightly smiled to him, and the guy beamed back. He was the only barista that worked in this café, and that is why they slightly knew each other.
"A cup of cappuccino and a piece of a cheesecake?" Shawn asked.
Liza nodded and smiled to him as an answer. She crossed the distance between the entrance and a bar counter and sat on a bar stool near the counter. The girl loved observing how Shawn was making her a cup of coffee and serving it to her with a piece of the cake, so she was watching all of his action very attentively.
"Thank you!" Liza said with an exited smile on her face when Shawn served the order to her.
"You are always welcome" Shawn replied.
If Liza was obsessed with watching Shawn making her order, then he really enjoyed observing her while she was savoring her cappuccino and a cheesecake. His eyes always sparkled and he couldn’t stop smiling when she was inside the café. The same situation was with Liza – the girl had butterflies in her stomach every time she went into this place and saw Shawn.
"So, how are your studies going?" asked Shawn while Liza was halfway through her treats.
"I am currently having some problems with philosophy, but I have no problems with other subjects. In fact, I am so interested in my cinematography course," replied Liza.
"Hm, and what do you need to do during this course?" asked the barista with curiosity in his voice.
"We just need to watch a bunch of movies that we will discuss later, and also we need to pick a few films from this list and write some papers about these motion pictures."
"And have you already chosen any of the film that you are wishing to analyze?"
"Oh, yeah. I am definitely leaning towards «Spirited away» by Hayao Myazaki!" replied Liza with excitement and energy.
"Oh, please, don’t call me out, but I have never watched this film…" answered the guy quietly.
"NO WAY!! IT IS THE BEST FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN," shouted Liza.
"It is just perfect in any aspects. The plot is gripping, and the characters are fantastic, and the whole animation and production seems unreal…" chattered Liza. She was really involved into this topic and continued to talk about it when Shawn interrupted her:
"Oh my God, and now I feel ashamed!" Shawn moaned.
"Yes, shame on you!" replied Liza and started to laugh.
"Okay, all jokes aside, but I saw somewhere on Facebook that there will be Hayao Myazaki's retrospective in New York this month, and it will kick off with «Spirited away», so if you have time and desire to watch it, you can go to this screening. I highly recommend you to watch it!" continued Liza.
"Oh, that sounds interesting… I will try my best to watch it during the retrospective!" the boy replied.
Liza smiled brightly as he replied. She had been sitting in that café for quite a long time, and right after Liza watched the time on her clock, she realized that she was running late for her Monday meeting with her sister.
"Oh no, I need to go! My sister is definitely waiting for me on the Broadway. How much do I have to pay?" asked Liza nervously.
"7 dollars, miss."
Liza pulled out some coins and paid for her order.
"Thank you and have a nice day!" said Liza sincerely.
"Oh yeah, enjoy the rest of the day and don’t be late to your meeting!" replied Shawn with a smirk.
The girl reached the entrance and opened the door, when suddenly Shawn called her:
"Liza, wait!"
The girl closed the door, and when she turned to the bar counter, Shawn was already in front of her. He was so close, that she could feel breath. It was speeded up and intermittent. Shawn looked at her eyes and asked Liza:
"Hm, so, maybe we can go to the Spirited Away screening together?"
A sincere smile appeared on the girl's face and her eyes started to shine. The thoughts in her mind were racing, and she replied with the only word she could squeeze out of herself:
"Sure."
Shawn started to move away from her with a pleased smile on his face. Liza opened the door, turned around to see Shawn's face at last and left the café. She was walking down the street and heading to the Broadway with the double amount of butterflies in her stomach.
