‘Hare’ by Albrecht Durer, a young couple Paul and Lucy, an American tourist
Episode 1
These colors are complete nonsense! - a young man was standing at the hall of the Albertina palace, loudly complaining to his girlfriend and everyone willing to listen about the most famous piece of art presented there - Look at it! There is no sense in this picture! Why do people consider it such a masterpiece? And the light? It’s so jazzy it seems they brought the hare to a photo studio and drew him there...
Paulie, don’t you think this picture extremely realistic for its time? Back then one couldn’t order two portraits and be depicted identically. The advancements of technology don’t tell you the whole narrative about how hard it was back then.
I still don’t like that chintzy colors. The shadows are sicky and faded, its shape is wrong and unclear.
Then maybe you’ll draw another one? With a hare as perfect as Durer’s but with right shadows and color contrast… Just for me - Lucy playfully laughed - Then I’ll personally come here and propose them to show a copy of your picture beside the original. And I’ll create a vote on the internet, to choose which one is better. Do you agree?
Paul simply laughed.
Episode 2 - 15 years later
A middle-aged man was sitting at a hall of Albertina palace, drawing something on an easel. ‘Hare’ by Albrecht Durer was hanging a few meters from him. He seemed very concentrated and focused, drops of sweat dripping from his forehead. Suddenly, a group of tourists started to discuss a picture
I don’t understand why it’s even shown here. It’s a picture for a village house, not for a palace. There’s no idea, no composition, no hidden sense. And some people still bother themselves redrawing it. - said a middle-aged woman with a bright American accent.
Excuse me, mam, what do you mean the picture has no idea? Isn’t life itself an idea? - Paul looked a little bit shocked - And this picture has more life than any other
But it’s only a hare - lady’s arguments weren’t particularly strong - and I think the color code is incorrect - I would choose its main tones to be less as soft beige and more as light grey
Many cultures understand hare as a symbol of fertility, some even say it’s connected with resurrection. Any picture may have its meaning - the only problem is to recognize it correctly. You know, I also had an argument similar to this, about that exact painting. And afterward, I took a brush and started to draw it myself, as I see it. The only problem is that it may be a little late - Paul looked sad - Never mind.
Why would it be too late? - a woman looked at him curiously
It’s a surprise to a person dear to me. The only problem is that she may not last until that surprise.
