Barracks by Marharyta Romanchyshyna

- Vlad, get down
from there, I beg you! - asked Vanya, while calm voice.
- What are you? Nothing will happen. Better go meet the girls, because you are standing idle. They are about to come. - Vlad answered, swaying with his feet on a concrete slab.
- Yah you! - Ivan said offended, and went down.

The front door slammed (for ten years, they lived in this apartment, my father still could not repair them so that those doors were quieter). There was a smell of borscht in the air, which the mother cooked all morning, at the same time staring out for the tiny Polina.
- Vladik, the sun, is that you? - it was a voice from the kitchen.
- Yes mom! I have news for you, you will not believe! the guy shouted happily, taking something out of his briefcase.
- Really? And what is this?
- Today I received 12 points in English lesson! - his eyes were filled with frantic pride for himself and he quickly began to show his diary to his mother.
- You're doing fine! - Mother was delighted. - Go wash your hands and eat, the borsch is ready.
Vlad did not have time to finish the remains of borsch, when someone knocked on the door. Little Polina woke up and started to cry.
- This is probably Vanya, mom. We will go for a walk, okay? - Vlad asked, “for the need”, knowing in advance that the answer would be yes.
- Go, but not very long, because in the evening we are going to visit grandmother, do you remember?
- Yeah! - sounded in response and the front door slammed again with a terrible growl.
Without hesitation, the guys headed towards an abandoned dilapidated building, called the barracks. We climbed to the second floor, to which the only remaining steps led, and Vlad, trying to show that he was not afraid of anything, climbed onto a concrete slab the size of a large kitchen table. A little drift on her, he began to look at old graffiti on the walls.

- Vlad! Once again I ask, get down from there! - this time in a nervous voice asked Vanya.
- Fuck, go for the girls! Got it already! - Vlad answered irritably and continued to swing on the stove.
Vanya went, but not for long. As soon as he came down from the second floor, the girls had already arrived and even slightly amused him with their laughter.
- Where is Vladik? - asked one of them. - Did not his mother let go?
But Ivan did not have time to answer, as he heard strange sounds coming from the second floor. They all ran up the stairs and, laughing, called Vlad. Again, with his jokes, he wants to scare us — a soothing thought ran through Vanya’s head, but what they saw made the heart stop fighting for a moment.
Vlad bent down too much, and now, holding on to the edge of the slab with one hand, he hung above the first floor.
- Please help me someone, I'll fall now! - in despair Vlad cried softly.
- Yes, yes, of course, friend! Hold on, please! - reassured his friend. - Alina, go call someone from the adults to the rescue, quickly!
Vanya tried to step onto the surface of the second floor with trembling legs. I have to save a friend - it sounded in his head, but taking the first step, he realized that he could not. The plate was shifted down, and from pressure on the surface, this happened twice as fast.
And suddenly, Vlad could not hang more, let go of his hand and fell to the first floor. Concrete slab - for him.
Vanya quickly ran to the first floor, charged with adrenaline, it even seemed to him that he moved the stove from its place for a friend to get out. But in vain. He looked under this concrete block, although he was afraid, very afraid, and he saw Vlad's bloody face and glass eyes that looked nowhere.

P.S. It was my friend too, though I lived in the house opposite. The next day, there was a coffin in their courtyard and all his relatives, friends, acquaintances came to say goodbye. I did not come. I was afraid to see those glass eyes.
P.P.S. Those entrance doors were never repaired. They were closed forever.
