The Story that a Song Can Tell by Kira Savchenko

"Hurry up, Cindy,
we are leaving in half an hour"
"OK, darling, I'll be ready in ten minutes".
Cindy was preparing to move into a new house in other city and was in search of her favorite dress. The woman has frisked all the shelves, but instead of clothes she has found a small old box. Cindy looked at it with eyes wide opened, like it was a lucky lottery ticket and she had won a jackpot. She immediately opened it with childish curiosity and began to examine all the things inside. The tickets to the first rock festival, dozen of valentines,a bottle of her favorite aroma, several poems from her first boyfriend, cuttings from wedding magazines, a letter to her future self, many other memorable things. Suddenly a discreet music player drew her attention. "I thought it was lost during my moving to college. Perhaps my parents had found it and put here". She picked her player and left the box inside a closet.
"Honey, I didn't find my dress here, I suppose I've lent it my sister. We can move in now."
Cindy comfortably sat down on the back seat of a car, had the headphones in and heard a familiar sound of the switching player. Two hours of nostalgia were waiting for her. She closed her eyes made the volume to maximum and put the button PLAY.  The first song sent Cindy to the summer camp by the sea. It was one of the warmest memories in her childhood, when their group had to make a performance on their local marine festival. Cindy met there her best friend Katy, who was from her town, as it turned out later. She remembered that festival day. The smells of sea and barbecue mixed inside her nose, someone played frisbee, several people sunbathed or spent their time mainly in water. It was the hottest of all days in this camp, that everyone tried to find a place in the shadow to protect from the burning sun. Cindy wanted to swim so bad, but she couldn`t due to lady days. So had Katy. This occasion helped girls got to know each other and they quickly became friends.
Next song. Old Yellow Bricks by Arctic Monkeys remembered Cindy about her classmate`s house wall made of yellow bricks. That was time of bright home parties and sleepless nights, her rebellious teenage years. It was Friday evening in May, warm as in July and unpredictable as usual. Four friends, Cindy and her classmates, went to buy some food in the supermarket on the corner. One brilliant idea came to Dustin`s head, to pick a shopping cart, jump inside and organize races. Cindy`s eyes lit up, “It's almost midnight. You are crazy! But I like it!” Two girls sat down into their improvised sport cars, while two boys were preparing to start and were going to capture this competition. “3..2..1.. GO!” They got started. Four fearless teenagers were driving shopping carts on the empty parking, their hair was blowing by wind and adrenaline was running through their veins. Cindy felt like the time has stopped. Suddenly they heard the sound of police car. Boys rapidly grabbed out the girls and then these weird four began to run at the speed of light. They were so focused while running that barely missed their house. Luckily, they managed to escape unnoticed.
Several songs passed, when her memorable one started playing. Cindy met her first love on the Stereophonics concert and later this song, We Share the Same Sun became theirs. He was such a sensitive guy, who wrote her poems, prepared romantic dates every time in a new place. It was a charming evening, when they danced on the School spring ball to this song and had their first kiss.
The battery of player was running down, but Cindy did not stop listening to the songs.
September. She had a wedding in September and it was their song of the evening.
Cindy had a habit, or it could be called rather a lifestyle, to associate songs with certain people. Her brother was a gay and she pretty supported him, especially when their parents misunderstood his choice and got him out of their house.
Several songs of her youth played and then player was shut down. At the same time she felt total emptiness inside and glut of different emotions. There were only a few songs, but what an impact they made on her. Cindy looked at this little piece of electronics with all her warmness and sentimentalism, because all the most valuable moments of her life were in it. “Music is a wonderful invention of people”, she thought and very soon fell asleep.
