The Biggest Mistake by Daria Kudenko

“I see a woman” she told him.
“It was Elizabeth. Elizabeth, who you broke up with 10 years ago, do you remember?” she asked. He kept silent.  “You wanted she felt guilty about herself, do you remember?” she asked again. He kept silent, but he was glaring at she.  “And... so you know what? You’ve done it! She is broken by loneliness now, I talked to her. Do you want to hear more details?” she asked He nodded.  “I don’t retell you our conversation, but I want to tell you something. When friends feel like paper chains in the rain and the sky holds nothing but the promise of more storms, life is lonely. When all she wants is a hand to hold or an arm about her shoulders and none comes, the world becomes cold and empty, a slow poison for the soul. We are born to be loved and nurtured, and to do the same for others. We are born to be in tribes with social bonds that last a lifetime. It's times like this she wishes she could melt in the rain like those paper people, fade away, anything to stop the ever-present pain.” His eyes are just about to fill with tears.  “This loneliness is a vice on her heart, squeezing with just enough pressure to be a constant pain. It kills her every day just a little bit more, taking what was once her inner light and replacing it with a darkness that overshadows each moment. It is the fuel of her nightmares, the reason she struggles to breathe when a new shock comes. Where is the limit? When comes the point at which dogs are called off and the help begins? Because she needs to know; she really needs to know.” she told.  He kept silent for so long after her words, she even wanted to go, but suddenly, he grabbed her arm, looked into her eyes and said with trembling voice: “I love her still. And I’m so sorry about all that she had to endure. I don’t deserve to be forgiven. And I’ll never be. I saw her, I saw how unhappy and depressed she is. And I was waiting for our conversation to find out that all of this because of me. If you met her tell her that I didn’t want to hurt her, that I will always be the biggest mistake for her, and she always will be the biggest love for me”.
