The Christmas Loneliness by Daria Yakunina

Snow-covered streets mirrored the evening lights,
the warm family conversations were heard from the windows, and the Christmas lights were melancholy singing the carols. That was Christmas Eve - the constant symbol of the family reunion.
Mike lived on the outskirts of the town in a small corner apartment. Its windows allowed him just to "enjoy" the gray high-rise buildings that overshadowed the routine of the inhabitants. In summer he went out to the street every night to pamper himself with the starry sky surrounded by the hated buildings. In winter he wistfully watched the patterned snowflakes that were bursting through the hated courtyard. He dreamed about the woman who could share with him those magical moments because the only Mike's constant companion was the loneliness – the major fear of his life. The bitter love forced him to become a prisoner of this place and to abstract from the outside world. Therefore, Christmas Eve was especially painful for him. The festive bustle constantly knocked at his windows to remind Mike of his lonely life.
On the opposite side of the town lived Emma who was also surrounded by the four walls. Several years ago she had to leave the ballet troupe due to a serious injury which forced the girl to become a humble prisoner of the acute angles of her small apartment. Her life was filled with performances, applause and flowers. Dressed in colored packs Emma performed with a circular whipping movement on the most famous stages that were her constant shelter from the imperfections of the world. Due to the turbulent career the dancer did not have a husband. She had left her father when he banned her to wear the points for the first. Her constant partner was the only girl`s fear - the insidious loneliness, that turned the Christmas party for her into a terrible trial year by year.
The central street of the town was breathing with the atmosphere of the holiday. Santa was watching from the show-windows of the stores at the pedestrians and the smell of the punch that came from all the windows made the passers to hurry to their families. The working day was almost over, so the crowds of waiters and office workers rushed home. Mike was slowly walking down along the frozen streets illuminated by the festoons. It was almost impossible to meet someone in the heart of the city this evening, so the man decided to go outside the apartment and drink something strong at the 24-hour pub. However, everything was closed. Desperate Mike wanted to return to the stop when a faded ray of light from the window of some café touched his face. Doubtlessly he opened the door and sighed with ease because there was only one girl and tired barman inside. Mike ordered coffee with whiskey and sat down at the little table near the window.
The light snowflakes circled in the air like ballerinas in the rays of the sophists. The man was drinking coffee looking at their innocence enviously and few meters away from him the girl was sitting near the window whose eyes were full of bitter tears. Suddenly the noisy "Jingle Bells" broke the silence. Subsequently, Mike realized that the barman`s wife had called him to force the man to close his "damned bar finally". In a few minutes both visitors have heard the ringing of the keys accompanied by the shy "sorry, but we are closing."
The doors were finally closed and Mike was standing at the lonely street with a "сafé-girl". At the moment he realized that it was time to listen to the heart. The man turned and sighed empathetically when the girl suddenly stretched out a hand and they had whispered at the same time:
- Emma
- Mike.
