A Story of Twins by Lada Sorokina

Year 1850 New England

One cold December morning a young woman, Lizzy Brooks, who was a seamstress, gave birth to two wonderful children: a boy and a girl. The girl was named Vanessa, in honour of the kind rich woman whom Lizzy worked for, and the boy – Victor, as once upon a time one reigning famous king.
The scenario of their childhood was quite ordinary: the children were wonderful, but the mother was too young and too poor to raise them on her own. What about their father, he was a solder, and when Vanessa and Victor were born, nobody had known about his location for six months. The boy and the girl grew up with the help of two women: their grandmother, Lizzy`s mother, who had a bad reputation as a sorceress witch in their village, and a rich old widow, who was their mother’s employer.
Years went by, but Vanessa and Victor were always together, unusually friendly even in teens. They were thick and thieves, as if the red sting of fate bound them together! Naturally, they were not just brother and sister, but they were twins.
1878
Victor and Vanessa were 28 years old. Vanessa was married to a former military man. She bore him a second son. He and his brother were still friendly and always had a connection. Uncle Victor often came to Vanessa’s house, drank tea on duty and conducted sincere conversations with Vanessa. In addition, Vanessa regularly wrote letters to him.
1890`s
The world was shocked with a new book of a little-known before, but very talented writer, whose pseudonym was V. Liesworth. He gained unexpected popularity and ascended to Olympus of glory. His books were printed by best of the best among editors and appeared one by one. A few years later, the world found out that the real name of an anonymous writer is Victor. Victor Brooks. He started showing up at social parties, he became a welcome guest eve at King’s court. Victor kept in touch with Vanessa, his sister. He used to stay in her house village for several months, he used to say that he got inspiration there.
1903
Victor was still well-known pseudonymous V. Liesworth. That year was the most difficult year in his life. That was a year of flu pandemic. Vanessa unexpectedly dies from the flu. A year later, Victor declared that after the death of his beloved sister. He stopped his career of a writer. He could not get inspiration in any other thing. The writer V. Liesworth loosed popularity as fast as he gained it. 1983 A student of Harvard Faculty of Historical science suddenly, during university practice, finds writer's manuscripts in archives. That is manuscripts of V. Liesworth. The student’s attention is attracted by the handwriting, which looks more like a woman’s. A few months later the world is shocked with the article “Why V. Liesworth is for Vanessa? Women’s rights 80 years ago”.
