It wasn’t Supposed to Happen by Oleksandr Sainchuk

Hi, Jim.

I received your letter and I’d like to say that I’m happy you wrote to me! It was interesting to read about your new-born son and how you are doing, so congrats mate! I would like to see him even bigger than you are! Anyway, I look forward to visiting you soon, so prepare to introduce the nephew to his uncle! And you asked about my life and how am I doing, well, not so good as I could wish. Not so long ago, maybe three days or even less, I was invited on my friend’s birth party. Everything was going to be quite wonderful, but I didn’t read the letter of invitation completely and so this happened. I so the time and address, so I told my girlfriend to get dressed and prepared to leave. Soon enough my friend Jacob and his wife Nicol should be here, so we could go together. Ring bell rang and I know who it was, but was surprised when I saw Jacob alone. I asked why his wife decided to stay home or where she was, maybe some work business. The answer shocked me from feet to hairs. Turned out that just boys were invited to the party. When Dina (my girlfriend) stepped out, Jacob was giggling, and she was smiling, because she didn’t have parties for a year, so did I. She was beautiful, I suppose even goddess could envy her. She was like a little burning star, which just starts to shine. And I was numb and wordless, couldn’t say anything, could see nothing. They were talking to each other, and I was standing and thinking what would be better to do? Maybe to lie, but to whom? I could stay home with Dina but… you see, she postponed an important meeting of hers. She would be upset to stay home and in addition to this, my conscious wouldn’t let me to go alone, I’m not so selfish to leave my beloved. But what if stayed, what would Stefan (he invited me to the party) think? That was such a riddle which I couldn’t handle. I started to blush, the blood pressure rose, the heart was almost jumping out of me breast. Moreover, I started sweating and that was the most visible way to show that I was nervous. More than that, I started to scratch my hands against each other and then Dina asked me if something’s wrong. To what I answered that I’m okay, but I was not. Suddenly, Jacob suggested going because it was time, but I wasn’t ready. I said that I forgot a tie. That way I surprised them both because the tie was already on me. I went back home and you know what? I called Stefan and retold him the situation I stuck in. You won’t guess what he answered. “Come on man, it was just a joke. Haha, how could I not invite my friend’s girls, hm? And about Nicol, er, she’s already here, helping me to prepare the table and all the stuff. Haha, I still can’t believe that you ate it! Come here soon because the meat is simmering down. Oh, mate!” I was surprised as a horse that smoked a cigarette, almost dead. After all this my shirt was sweaty and dirty, so I had to change that. When I stepped out of the house, both my girl and Jacob were laughing at me and said it’s high time we left. Damn, that was pretty joyful party, but what did I go through to get there!
Best regards, your friend.
